Alliance of Nigeria Students Against Neo liberal Attacks

INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE IN A NATIONAL STUDENT SUMMIT

The Alliance Office Nigerian Students Against Neo Liberal Attacks (ANSA) in collaboration with the Committee For Defense of Human right (CDHR), specially invite you, in view of your involvement in the struggle of the students' movement, to the students' SUMMIT for students' union leaders and activists in tertiary institutions in the country. The summit is scheduled to hold from the f Sept. 21st - 23rd 2017 at the YABA Labor House.

THEME: The students movement and the STRUGGLE to save public education in Nigeria

Without much emphasis on needless rhetoric, it is worthy of note that the spate of unprecedented attacks on the education sector has without any doubt gotten to ridiculous height of maddening crescendo. This numerous attacks ranged from fee increments, arbitrary introduction of fraudulent charges to horrifying condition of living and learning.

Needless to say, these attacks were a consequence of long years of education underfunding. The Buhari led government on the other hand has not done any better in placing needed priority on the education sector. The pitiful allocation of 50billion naira as capital intervention in the education sector can only suggest one thing; the government just created the enabling environment for willing and greedy VCs/Rectors/Provosts to begin to increase fee without any modicum of consideration for poor Nigerians who can barely afford a daily two square meal due to the biting recession. Unfortunately, the inability of the NANS leadership to launch a coordinated fight back against this ignoble spate of attacks has left in isolation, campus activists and placed radical Students’ Unions at the mercy of vicious University administrators. It is such absence of a nationally coordinated solidarity from other Students’ Unions that has rendered as near fruitless, All attempts by fighting Students’ Unions to combat this rein of academic terror in our tertiary institutions and made Students activists a prey to arbitrary EXPULSIONS, SUSPENSIONS, RUSTICATIONS and countless other names of political victimizations. From UNILAG 13, AAUA 22, to YABATECH 25, FUTO 6, UI 2, NOUN1 etc.

With the recent resolve of government at all levels to continue to underfund education and the relentless effort of inconsiderate management of tertiary institutions to continue to increase fee whilst also cutting back on welfare conditions, it however becomes highly imperative to put together radical pro-student machinations to effectively kick start a coordinated fight back and revive the spirit of solidarity in the student movement which has been characteristics of NANS of the 80s and early 90s. The summit would also take a holistic analysis of the state of the student movement, how to rebuild it and make it respond swiftly to the myriads of problems confronting our education system vis anti-poor policies of management and government. The summit would as well make exhaustive deliberations on how to begin genuine national campaign against fee hikes, Education Underfunding, Victimization of Student Activists, Education commercialization and many other associated anti-student policies. The summit would go a long way in taking us through the left-leaning ideological basis of the Students Movement, its relationship with Staff Unions, Organized Labor and Pro-Working people’s organizations. The summary of the last paragraph is inherent in this truth; that the summit will spell and champion a new age of radical Students Unionism and activism, a kind that has not been witnessed for a very long while.

REVISED SUMMARY OF THE GOALS OF THE SUMMIT:
