A need for speed, a need for heed by Dunnex Samuel
A NEED FOR SPEED, A NEED FOR HEED
Even though, I am not a prophet of doom, the lamentable situations on campus which I have observed lately have left me no other choice but to start considering the looming doom which awaits us as a union, if certain measures are not put in place as fast as possible. Certain occurrences have further given me a reaffirmation that my presumption about the unchallenged safety of students on campus is tending to a zero state of no return.
Sequel to the incident that happened in Angola very recently. The antisocial act pulled up by the members of the ( need for speed gang ) who are known for constantly oppressing students on campus with their four-wheel machine is highly condemnable. It is an obvious fact that these elements, without fears, drive recklessly around halls of residence (anglomoz) and even New Buka mostly in the night as if they are in a race competition to see hades.
If memories are to be remembered, this mischievous act has claimed the lives of promising students while it rendered some life injuries.
Not to talk of other evils they use their vehicles to perpetrate around halls of residence, especially anglomoz.
Though, I would commend the timely intervention of students that stood against the neo fascist elements from apprehending, rather kidnapping the Angola hall chairman. I would spare no ink in condemning every party that played a role, directly or indirectly in the deteriorated security state which we have on campus which could have given the *'Evans'* followers such an effrontery to carry out such act.
It should be recalled that certain years before, Great Ife campus is one of the most peaceful in the nation, as a result of her zero tolerance to cultism, neoliberal attacks and any form of oppression on students. A time when threatening or slapping a fellow student was considered a grievous sin and students are publicly disgraced and paraded for fighting.
A time when bullying was considered a cults like act and even renowned cultists shiver at the mention of Great Ife because of her past exploits in curtailing the anti-social act.
A rational state of mind should wonder how the eveconscious Great Ife has degenerated into a situation where the union leaders safety is no longer guaranteed on campus, I wonder what should be expected of the safety of an average student both within and outside campus. The degeneracy is not far-fetched from the fact that consciousness among students have gradually degraded to the barest minimum as a result of internal and external attacks.
I must confess that the Angola hall chairman is not the first recipient of this assault, it has been happening for times but just unattended to. I can remember vividly attending to such similar case, earlier this semester when an Angolan was threatened by a member of the need for speed gang and even went to the extent of declaring that the sttudent would be killed within four days.
As irrational as such sounds which shouldn't be treated with levity, I was so disappointed to see a notable member of the CEC defending them on the basis that they're are his friends. A similar case of such too happened not long ago when a student was cleverly confronted at the front of the college of health sciences where his phone was forcefully withdrawn from him after the individual declared himself as a armed cultists and also escorted him to an ATM machine.
Many a situations of such have happened and yet no proactive measure has been put in place to curb it's possible recurrence in the future. I am sure many other students must have fallen victims of this marauding beasts but fail to speak up because of fears.
In accordance with the title of this piece which shows a need for speed requires a need for heed, I would make my recommendations;
The students' union should reaffirm it's position against cultism, oppression and any form of violence supported with practical actions and not mere words of mouth.*
The perpetrators should be paraded publicly around campus and should be properly dealt with accordingly to the rules of the union*
The perpetrators should be made to fish out other members of their bad gang (that is even not involved in this particular case) and made to make undertaking to desist from rough driving and campus hooliganism and the Union should put them on its watchlist*
Students should also be properly sensitised on the importance of security consciousness and alertness*
The Union should have a task force probably through the Security Committee apparatus that would be placed to monitor careless driving on this strategic roads, and also suspicious activities on campus, especially at night.*
