Save Our Union by Gbenga Von
SAVE OUR UNION ACTION CAMPAIGN, ON THE STATE OF THE UNION.
The attack on the Angola hall chairman is an open cult violence; we maintain that the union must consistently reaffirm the congressional position of zero tolerance to cultist.

Comrade Gbenga Von |
The criminal silence of the union leadership over the two weeks stiffen examination time table is an exposure of students to mass failure.
The university administration must concede to free, quality and processing accessible health services to students at the health centres, any attempt to bill students at any period is fraudulent and must be rejected.
The parliamentary judgement to vindicate the union executives over bus purchase scandal despite attached discrepancies, mismanagement of funds and obvious set out to defraud the union as reported by the investigation committee IS evil conspiracy.
We condemn the university administration for sponsoring the leadership of the parliament to amend the union constitution; A union that has also been found wanton in defending the union principle and constitutional aberration should not further destroy the age long radical constitution.
congressional resolutions towards pragmatic solutions to students' poor welfare conditions must be effected by the union.
Without any sense of ecstasy, it is worthy of note not to only lament on the ridiculous and dehumanizing attack on the Angola hall chairman, but it should be noted that such action should be understood as an open and fast rise of fascism on campus. Such act was perpetuated due to the failure of the union to aggressively stem the rise of cultism with rigorous campaign. We believe that for such attack to have been openly operated in Angola hall that has thousands of students contained in it, it is a reflection of the perceived weakness of the Union that has failed to take the issue of cultism serious and have continued to pamper known thug elements. If the Hall Chairman and other union officers do not open a campaign against cultism and deal with the mess with ruthlessness, we only hope the recent attack would not be a tip of the iceberg.
In the immediate, the hall executives should orchestrate the Angolans’ resolution that an open petition should be forwarded to the university administration and the police, stating the profile of these culprits and charging the university and the police to take up the case and be on lookout for these persons, for if any violence whatsoever arise from these culprits in future, the university and the police should be held responsible.
As much as we condemn the slim-fitted, mass-failing examination time table designed by the university senate, we also take cognizance of the conspired role of the union leadership that has been criminally silent over the impending looming mass failure. For us, we believe that a union should at first, have the interest of its members at heart to defend it at all time and should not concede to the university administration’s imposition at the detriment of her own members. It should be noted that the poor welfare obtainable on campus is an overwhelming template to render poor academic performance, therefore it is inhumane for the university administration to massively fail students with a two week examination time table where some students have over twelve courses to read and write examinations afterwards. The union should not pretend to be unaware of this fact, the time table must be extended to ensure conveniency and for students to better prepare for their examination.
At this point too, the concession of the union leadership to postpone the billing of students at the health center by the school administration come next semester is not safe for students. While we commend the effort of the union leadership to make move against the billing, however, the outcome of the move is tantamount to the conceding to postponement of an innocent’s murder till tomorrow, when eventually, it does not mean the innocent is not going to be murdered anyway. It is either the unjust murder is rejected or conceded to, in this case, the former is the only way out. The union leadership should recall that the parliamentary resolution is for the union to reject and ensure the reversal of health center billing policy, for us, that must be effected. We also maintain that the consistent horrendous welfare of students is bound to continue if the union does not follow the pragmatic steps as resolved in the congressional and parliamentary resolutions which include the need for aggressive campaign to fund public education and the need to mount pressure on the university administration to provide alternatives to the water and power supply, to renovate the halls and lecture theatres from the heavy internally generated billions of naira.
It is never too late to state that the essence of the union must be understood and never misplaced. The legislative arm of the union is supposed to be the most critical arm devoid of sentiments in its operation.
Hence, the report of the investigating committee on the bus purchase which clearly stated with facts, the worth of the bus to be lesser than the N2.5million extravagantly expended on it by the union was taken with levity by the parliament. The report clearly showed as read out and presented by the chairman that the purchasers of the bus were set out on a clear cut move to defraud the union of its funds. The judgment of the house to overlook this has laid templates to ruin this union in due time by anyone who deems fit to spend lavishly and unconstitutionally. However, we cannot but state again that the idea of self-help projects cannot sustain the union neither can it curtail the attacks being incessantly launched on students. Rather, such project as seen in the bus purchase is only bringing crises, financial insecurity and liability on the union as the bus now is.
To conclude, we maintain that the university administration must desist from interfering in the students’ union sovereignty and operation. The move of the leadership of the parliament to unduly amend the union constitution as sponsored by the university authorities is condemnable. The only standing treasure of our union is the sacrosanct constitution and should not be toyed with by this administration that is even guilty of raping union principles and criminal height of constitutional aberrations. It must be pointed out that the union constitution was attempted to be doctored and imposed by the university administration led by Dr. Durosinmi, the then DSA and under the gullible pro-administration regime of Ibikunle Isaac the then union president 2014/15, it took the sagacity of comrades and conscious mass of students to reject the attempt. On these bases, we reiterate that the union should focus on gaining the trust of students by taking pro students stance, further sensitize and orientate the students. This should even be done by making available in mass the union constitution to students as many students have not even ever seen the constitution of the union. The union should not further disorient and misinform students through criminal constitutional amendment.
To address all these issues aforementioned, there is a dear exigency for a public meeting to be mobilized before the examination starts!
