The Crises in Our Union; What Must Be Done
Save our union campaign
The crises in our union; what must be done!
The cult violent fight among union executives is condemnable; an open moderation must be demanded by students
Students must demand an open and Democratic adminstration of their union dues against THE executive's of the union’s indiscriminate spending
only an ungratified sect parading themselves as security committee will continue to constitute threats to students; students must rise to discard anything sect imposing threats on their safety
the corrupt role of the university administration to destroy the union by turning it into a puppet through undue interference is condemnable as it is the foundation of the union crises.
As we go home for break, we join students to demand that the university administration must rather ensure then improvement own welfare conditions of students; the union must press home students’ demands
At this juncture, it is important to solidarize with mass of students who have through thick and thin in the examination period despite the obvious conditions that could warrant failure, ranging from disorganize examination time-table, poor learning and reading conditions as well as to the horrible economic realities. We believe that attempts to frustrate students out of reach of quality education is on everyday basis a call of the federal government and university administrations, but with consistent pressure from our united struggle against oppression, victory can only be assured.
To begin with, one cannot but lament on the pitiable state of our dear union. At this point when grievous attacks are at the peak ranging from poor funding of education leading to unending industrial strike actions of ASUU, NASU etc, insecurity on campus, horrendous conditions of living and learning of great IFE students to the points of deaths, sickness, academic victimizations of students and to harassment from lecturers, one would expect that the supposed strength of the weak, the voice of the voiceless and the hope of students which is the union has in itself become the pinnacle of students’ intimidations, insecurity and in a state of lawlessness. Great IFE students, of what hope are we left with? The recent cult violent fight among the union executives to the point of using arsenals against one another is nothing but a guarantee that the campus is not safe for students. We believe that union leaders are to coordinate students for the fight against oppression, social vices and intimidations, but at a point where the union leaders themselves are found wanton of breaching peace and security, it remains a call mass based actions from students themselves if at all the union must be rescued. On this basis, we join students to demand for an open moderation of such impeachable act displayed by the union vice president and the director of socials. Any attempt to bury it in guise of not wanting to dent the union image which has already been dented or by the virtue of power play is a betrayal of the sanctity of our union. No one is bigger than the union and its principles!
It must however be stated that some sect whom we can only refer to as hired guards the union president parading themselves as security committee of the union, some of whose studentship identity cannot be ascertained, without any consent of the union legislation through the parliament or congress, and have been found wanton of intimidating and brutally attacking students, this sect of individuals is only at the verge of students’ wraths and must be curbed. The parliament must take charge on constituting a security committee as a task bestowed on the SRC by the constitution to constitute committees where needed. Not until we have a democratically constituted security committee can students’ safety among students be guaranteed.
At this point also, the save our union action committee condemn the indiscriminate spending of union funds without due process, as at now being the end of the semester, no budget has been passed in the house while students’ dues continually get squandered on unratified projects. It is necessary to state here again that the union does not exist for the sole aim “self-help projects” as hell bent on by this administration, a union that stops to orchestrate demands from the university administration and the government but rather providing alternative to the status quo in erecting projects opens the door for the university’s irresponsibility, such union is digging its own grave and gradually sinks itself, at the same time exposing the union to NANS thuggery approach, the fight over money (the root of all evil). To be blunt, it is a call for cultism! We are also aware of how the university administration has consistently pushed the union to venture into distracting projects in order to cover up their irresponsibility and to blind the union from the right course of challenging and demanding. We see this lawlessness and financial porosity as either unseriousness of the parliament or a conspired act to corruptly insecure the students’ funds which in turn result in violence and thuggery displayed in recent times.. The parliament through the budget and finance committee and the financial secretary of the union must provide students with critical financial statements of the union so far, as well as a detailed budget of the administration for transparency.
As we go home, the union must press home necessary students’ demands before the administration ranging from effective fumigation, habitable living conditions and better learning facilities, the resuscitation of Moremi hall power condition through provision of alternative power source and system etc. these demands are the more reason why the union must take a position with the ongoing ASUU/NASU/SSANU industrial actions by solidarizing through press conferences, Radio and TV features as well as registering these demands in major Newspapers.
ALUTA CONTINUA… VICTORIA ASCERTA!
