[Press Release] Bursary Physical Verification
Revolutionary greetings to the ever conscious and ever dynamic Delta State Students' worldwide. We salute the perseverance and doggedness of our members over the 2015/2016 bursary payments. Of course it is no longer news that payment for this bursary have commenced.
However for a while the National secretariat of NADESSTU have consistently received calls from members all over the country, this is not unconnected with the recent broadcast made on radio stations by the management of the Delta State bursary and scholarship board urging students to appear in person for physical verifications in warri and environs.
It should be recalled vividly that the requirements for the last registration includes: possessing the National Identification Number(NIM), Bank verification number (BVN), HOD AND DEAN signatures amongst other requirements. The high point of the electronic registration was the increment in registration fee from #300 to #800 which was to enable a smooth online registration and verification process.
However, It beats our imagination therefore to hear from external sources that the Scholarship board have reverted to the old and crude ways of physical verifications, one that was marred with loss of innocent lives due to accidents, gross corruption, embezzlement of public funds in guise of travel allowances, disenfranchise of eligible students, long queues and delay in payment.
It is not untrue that over the years the NADESSTU as an association have been reduced to a mere paper weight and secondary school prefects whose opinion and inputs do not count. However it must be told that the current leadership will not rest on its oars until every eligible student has been paid as we totally frown and dissociate ourselves with this recent reintroduction of the archaic physical verification at a modern time like this where the world is going digital.
Way Forward:
1. At a time like this when there are mounting security challenges around the country, students should not be subjected to travelling for any reason not even on the name of going for physical verifications.
2. If students have been made to pay extra monies meant for online screening and verifications, they should not be made to stand in long queues and physical hardships in the name of verifications.
3. The double verifications insinuates that the respective schools management are not trust worthy, this position negates their pride and prestige as custodians of our ivory towers and a centre for excellence in learning and "CHARACTER."
4. Respective school managements should also ensure their lists are well vetted and guided till the board acknowledges its receipt, to avoid sharp practices and doctoring, as this can lead to the eventual blacklisting of such schools and the portraying of such schools in "black light."
5. The Delta State bursary and scholarship board should halt the ongoing physical verifications and commence immediate payments of any schools who have been verified by their respective managements without delay.
Finally, as leaders of the association, we promise a more virile, responsible and responsive leadership where the interest of every student is jealousy protected and defended.
Vive 'le aluta!
