OPEN LETTER TO THE STUDENT UNION GOVERNMENT
(SUG)
We are sorry to say that Delta State
Polytechnic Ogwashi-Uku does not have a union from the SUG executive level, the
legislatures the school and various departmental executives.
How
can it be said that with a school of over 20,000 population have started midterm
test without text books to read in preparation for this test and the union is
not sensitive to this, at least to deliberate on behalf of the student with the
management to look for a possible solution to this problem, as exams is fast
approaching.
Secondly
students are being deprived from writing test, attending lectures and soon
students will be deprived from even entering the school because of school fees
as if we are primary school children, considering the current economic
situation in the country, most of our parents who are being owed up to six
months salaries have not being paid, our girls are now being pushed into
prostitution and our boys into rubbery, with all this things in mind our union
has done practically nothing on this issue, also considering the fact that the
school fees was even increased from the usual amount and since the resumption
of school the price of the school fees has being undulating like the price of
fuel (not stable) and just one week after this issue was resolved a drastic
action was taken against the student. Yet the union is still mute about the
issue.
The
most painful aspect of this whole issue is not even the increment but the
additional N10,000 that is being proposed for late payment of school fees.
The question now is that should the student now drop out of school because our
parents have not been paid their salaries due to the current economic
situation? Indeed our students union are really weaklings.
Also
a memo was passed demanding that 2015/2016 graduating students to pay an
additional fee of N10,000 for late submission of files and those who are in ND2
and HND2 respectively now are being stopped from submitting their files. The question
now is the ND2 and HND2 are they 2015 / 2016 graduating students? Why are they
being stopped from submitting their files? What is our union doing about this? IS A SHAME.
Another
bitter pill that is so hard to swallow is the issue of JAMB REGULARIZATION,
students regularize JAMB at N5,500 while students who paid lately from march were told their payment were invalid as
jamb has stopped school from registering the said payment for student, the new
payment for the said fee is being pegged at N10,000 including extra N2,500 as
processing charges, another question that comes to mind is what happens to the
first N5,500 that was paid, no one is saying anything about it not even our REPRESENTATIVES the so called SUG.
In
conclusion our union are more concerned on issues concerning MONEY than issues concerning students Their
greatest challenge is fear, fear of losing their result on a fight for a just
cause, their ambition is to put Naira in their pocket, they sit to apportion
projects that will benefit them and not the students, those who are
representing us are supposed to be accountable to the people because the
people’s power is greater than those in power but today the reverse is the case,
is not as if we are fighting the union but we have spoken secretly and no one
seems to want to take the bull by the horn, now is time to speak out to the
public.
