A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE POLYTECHNIC
Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-uku (DSPG) is one among the institutions in Delta State, Nigeria that were all established on 12 November 2002 by the Government of Delta State through a Bill signed into Law by the State Governor, Chief James Onanefe Ibori. The State Government partnered with the University of Westminster, London to assist in management and technical support for the institution. The purpose of the international collaboration is to bring the very best of current practice in the polytechnic education to Nigeria and in particular to Delta State.
On Thursday 23rd January, 2003, the polytechnic formally opened for academic activities at a rented temporary site along Ubulu-Uku road, Ogwashi-uku, the political building of defunct SPD along Azagba and some renovated structures of the defunct Ogwashi-uku Polytechnic, Azagba Road, Ogwashi-uku up till December 2004 when the first structures were completed at the permanent site while the polytechnic was fully located to its permanent site at the beginning of 2007/2008 Academic Session.
DSPG held its inaugural Academic Board meeting on March 6th 2003 with 10 academic staff in attendance, while the first matriculation ceremony was held on Saturday 5th April, 2003.
At the outset of the polytechnic, four schools were established to run programmes in three departments. The four schools were School of Art and Design, School of Business studies, School of Engineering and School of General studies. The three Departments were Department of Accountancy, Department of Fashion Design and Clothing Technology and Department of Mechanical Engineering.
